2008 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS : WOMENS

Since the French Open and Wimbledon, Ana Ivanovic has not made much of an impact at least not at the US Open. This will be her first Australian Open since her breakthrough and it will be hard since most players will be prepared to face her. Na Li is making a return from injury and has gone 5-0 this year and winning a title in the Gold Coast Championships this year. Marion Bartoli is finding it hard to keep up with the success at Wimbledon and Dinara Safina is not making any suggestion that she is going to progress from the level she has attained.

The player most of these lot will want to see the back of, even Ivanovic, is Venus Williams. The older of the Williams sisters missed the first grandslam last year and since 2003 when she reached the finals has been a casualty in the early rounds.

With her new found form in 2007 and winning Wimbledon yet again, Venus Williams is alternative number three to win Quarter Three @ 4/5  as the hunger for success is back and no one apart from her sister can match the never-say-die attitude.

The final quarter has a lot of potential for a huge upset. There is quality all the way and it is safe to say follow the big names until they start to face eachother. Anna Chakvetadze, the young Russian who is at number 6 made her push into the top 10 last season and is in line to face Michaela Krajicek the talented Dutch player. Lucie Safarova is also present in this part of the draw and will be a presence if she can find her old form. Hantuchova who finished last season off well is also there but she is unpredictable just like Nadia Petrova of nowadays. The young bloods to take note of are; Agneiska Radwanska who made her name at the US Open by defeating Sharapova, Agnes Szavay who is knocking on the door and has made it into the top 20. As great as their chances are if they find the right form, the woman in form in this bottom group is Svetlana Kuznetsova. There is a grandslam to win for this fierce player and even though she has not had the best times at the Australian Open in her career, she will take any opportunity if her main nemesis, Henin, falls at the top half of the draw. Svetlana Kuznetsova is alternative number @ 12/1 with Bet365

There is a case to be made for a few young players but the field of players at this year's open is full of players with vast exeprience at the Australian. Even though Ana Ivanovic has not made any impact at the Australian Open, last year she must have learnt a lot from her loss in the finals of the Roland Garros and if she is presented another opportunity, she is wiser now to deal with the situation.
