GOLF: ACCENTURE WORLD MATCHPLAY
Darren Clarke is the great value bet at 22/1 for this week's
World Matchplay at La Costa, in an event with which he
always seems to bring out his best and he seems to enjoy
playing here. He always seems to do well - I walked
around the harbour in Torquay for two hours and managed to
manufacture a perfect excuse for disappearing off on my own
at half-hourly intervals four times seemingly without being
found out. I was seriously smug because, not only had I got
away with it, but I was also through the first four legs as
well.
Things were looking good. It was only when I returned
to the cafe to sip my now tepid latte that things started to
go wrong.
“You must have the worst case of the shits ever, darling.
Either that or your non-betting holiday has gone out of the
window.”
As I was in a strong position I decided to level and
confessed that I had Indeed broken my resolve to not bet but
that I was only two legs away from copping the jackpot and
that if I got it up then this holiday and one or two others
would be paid for.
The response was not quite the euphoric one I had hoped for.
