Arsenal v Chelsea

LAST week’s interminable Champions League draw provided a superb example of how something that should be simple and exciting can be made over complicated and utterly boring.

A cloth sack full of numbered balls isn’t good enough for Uefa, so we were treated to the sight of Paolo Maldini handing the sort of plastic eggs my children usually find cheap and nasty plastic toys in, to a man whose job it was to open the eggs and read out the teams, while another pair of Uefa bureaucrats drew for the groups.
It was possibly the most long-winded draw in history and went on for what seemed like days.
What made it even worse from a punting perspective is that the draw itself didn’t throw up too many opportunities for an upset. Having said that, however, Villarreal should give Man United a run for their money in Group D.
Both finished third in. th9it
respective league competitions last season and by similar margins, United 18 points behind Chelsea and the Spanish side 19 behind Barcelona.
However, the Yellows compete in the strongest league in the European football heirarchy and their Index rating is actually higher than United’s with a very positive Trend figure of +8.

So far, the media spotlight cast on this aspect of last week’s draw has appeared to focus on the reunion of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side with Diego Forlan - an expensive flop during his time at Old Trafford - who has found his feet at Villarreal and matched Arsenal’s Thierry Henry goal-for-goal in the race for last term’s European Golden Boot. Villarreal might have been a little lucky to avoid extra time against Everton in the second leg of their qualification tie after referee Pierlu Collina disallowed
Duncan Ferguson strike at the Madrigal Stadium but make no mistake, Villarreal are a good side who will give United problems and their true ability is not reflected in the betting which has the Premiership side a best-priced 4-6 and the Spaniards
3-1.
