2008 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS : WOMENS

Out of the 4 grandslams last year, Justine Henin made two of them hers. She has a dominance in the women's game but that might not be the case this year with some interesting names showing promise last year and a comeback from an old 'master' on the women's tour...

5 Best Alternatives to Justine Henin.

Two names jump out apart from Henin when going through the first quarter of the draw. Lindsay Davenport, the comeback Mum, is in fantastic form even better than what Martina Hingis showed when she returned to the tour. But the problem for Davenport will come in round 2 with a potential class with Maria Sharapova.

Whoever wins that encounter will have to fight it out with Henin as long as the number 1 player does not lose to Golovin who will give her a hard time if she makes it to round 3. With the experience of Davenport and the determination she has shown since she got back on the tour, she still has the drive and the natural tools to overcome any opponent. Lindsay Davenport as alternative one to win @ 20/1.

The next quarter down is not much different in difficulty just like the mens' draw. Experience is what will win this Australian Open as there are no new threats lurking about in the draw. Jelena Jankovic had to pull out of her singles match during the Hopman cup against Serena Williams and that is never a good sign.

There is also Amelie Mauresmo and Patty Schnyder who are very experienced at this level but only one can progress as a possible early class is in the offing for the pair. Further down, the likes of Vaidisova and Zvonareva who have potential but just cant put a run together will have to overcome Serena Williams and that is no easy task even for the number 1 player in the world. It is hard to look elsewhere in the quarter for the pick as the defending and surprise champion from last year can have it all her way. Serena Williams is alternative number 2 to win @ 6/1
