Master Minded, the Paul Nicholls French bred looks one of the greatest ever horses and if he turns up in reasonable form surely no one will challenge him. The six year old put up one of the all-time great Festival performances last March when slamming defending champion Voy Por Ustedes by 19 lengths in the Champion Chase. The manner of the victory was flawless, exceptional and breathtaking.
Clive Smith’s horse has run twice this season winning effortlessly both times with his latest win at Ascot in the Victor Chandler Chase won with the minimum of fuss. As you would imagine he is odds on across the board to defend his crown and it’s Paddy Power who offer the most competitive odds on him at 1/3.
So just who can take this monster on?
Well the 2007 winner and 2008 runner-up Voy Por Ustedes looks like swerving Master Minded and will instead surely head to the Ryan Air Chase the following day. Next in the betting is the Irish challenger Big Zeb who is a best price 12/1 with Paddy Power. After winning the Dial-A-Bet Chase after Christmas his stock rose heavily but an untimely fall at Punchestown on the opening day of February provided connections with a real head ache.
Petit Robin is Nicky Henderson’s Champion Chase contender and while the horse sports a progressive profile it would take a massive leap of faith to see this fellow challenge Master Minded. He finished second to the German raider Fiepes Shuffle over Christmas in the Desert Orchid Chase and then finished a distant 16 lengths behind Master Minded in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot in January. He’s available at a general 14/1 for the Wednesday highlight.
It would be a great achievement if the David Pipe trained Well Chief turns up on March 11th after the injury problems that have plagued this brilliant chasers career. Pipe insists it’s so far so good for the ten year old but the fact he hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since April 2007 is a major worry. This fella has class by the bucketload lest we forget he mixed it with Moscow Flyer and Azertyuiop in their prime but those punters getting involved at 20/1 perhaps need to stop reading their Hans Christian Anderson books.
Perhaps the one for each way punters is Master Minded’s stablemate Twist Magic ? Available at a tasty 20/1 this horse was going really well at Sandown in December against Master Minded when he came a cropper at the second last. His run three weeks later at Kempton was too bad to be true and it was likely that he had that recent fall still on his mind.
