Soccer: The Championship
Sa Aug 6 – 5.15 pm BST (SS1)
Its time once again for the Championship kick off, and it
looks wide open just like last year. There are a number of
teams who look capable of a top six finish, and there are
several teams in contention for the title. The three
relegated sides of Southampton, Crystal Palace and Norwich
are all high up in the betting, and are very short prices,
but on first glance they don't look well-equipped to bounce
straight back as title winners. Southampton, in particular,
have shed several players, including Peter Crouch, and
impressive goalkeeper may be on his way. They and may need a
season or two at this level to rebuild.
Instead, we'll go for teams that have had a season to adjust
to disappointment and who started building last year and, of
the single figure quotes, Wolves make the most appeal at
6/1. They played superbly well at the end of last season,
and that form looks to be continuing through pre
season. In Jackie McNamara, manager Glen Hoddle might have
found just the type of player who can turn last season's
draws into wins.
Following their near miss in the playoffs last season, Derby
could be also worth an interest at a juicy 20/1. Despite
increased interest from other clubs, new boss Phil Brown has
managed to keep last years squad more as less the same as
previously, which includes Polish international Grzegorz
Rasiak who, after 16 goals last term, could also be an each
way bet for the Leading Goalscorer at 16/1.
In League 1, Doncaster could be a great value bet at 16/1
(5/1 to gain promotion), after some big money signings. They
lost only four times at home, and this will be a key if they
are to prgress this term. They also have a great, shrewd
manager in Dave Penney. Looking down to League Two, Boston
have been boosted by the signings of ex Premiership stars
lJulian Joachim and Noel Whelan, and they look value at
16/1.
Ante Post Picks:
Championship: Wolves @ 6/1; Derby @ 16/1
Championship Leading Goalscorer @ 16/1
League 1: Doncaster @ 16/1 (5/1 for promotion)
League 2: Boston @ 16/1
Looking at this weekends Championship games, it looks like a
big season for the nearly men Sheffield Utd and Neil
Warnock. Utd look like they should have too much for a
lacklustre Leicester side who have are more or less the same
team as last year, with no notable transfers.
Wolves face a tough ask in their opening game against ex
Premiership Southampton, but should be worth a point.
Best Weekend Bets:
Chelsea to beat Arsenal @ 6/5
Sheffield United to beat Leicester @ Evens
Wolves to draw @ 9/4
Leeds to beat Millwall @ 8/13
