Binocular, has been the market
leader for most of the season after impressively
winning at Aintree in April and setting up this
year’s campaign in style. It’s been a walk in the
park so far this season for the five year old with an easy victory in Haydock against workmanlike opponents and then
following up with a very impressive win in the
rearranged Boylesports.com International at Ascot.
With the likes of Celestial Halo and
defending champion Katchit behind him it’s
undoubtedly the best piece of hurdling form this
season. 6/4 with Paddy Power and Sportingbet is the best price
available and while he’s the one to beat doubts
remain whether this talented horse will get up the
Cheltenham hill after his performance in last year’s
Supreme Novice Hurdle where he struggled to reel in
the winner Captain Cee Bee.
So who are the main candidates to beat the mighty
Binocular?
Top of the list is last year’s Triumph
Hurdle winner Celestial Halo. The Paul Nicholls
charge has twice finished behind Binocular but there
are reasons to believe that the tables could be
turned on March 10th. Celestial Halo kicked off his
season finishing second to Binocular in December and
then followed it up with a good win over Osasna at
Sandown in late-January. With course and Festival
wining form under his belt his odds of 12/1 with
Sportingbet certainly appeal.
Celestial Halo’s victim in January Osana finished
second to Katchit in last year’s Champion Hurdle and
will definitely come on for the run after his
January defeat. You can back him at 11/1 with
Sportingbet which represents good value.
Crack Away Jack was well backed in the summer for
this race but has fell short of top class this
season. He lost out to the mare Chomba Womba at
Ascot in November and then finished last in the
Boylesports International the following month. The
only positive to cling to appears to be his win in
the Fred Winter Hurdle at last year’s Festival but
general odds of 12/1 don’t jump off the page.
Last year’s Champion Hurdle hero was the loveable Katchit who held off Osana to take the hurdling
crown at odds of 10/1 but the Alan King trained
horse hasn’t looked as up for it this year and
holding onto his crown will surely be beyond him.
Katchit has run three times this season and has yet
to record a victory losing to the likes of Snap Tie
and Chomba Womba. His trainer has reported that he
has been more enthusiastic of late in the yard but
winning at odds of 14/1 are surely beyond him even
though he loves Cheltenham.
The Irish always send over a big team for this race
but this year’s bunch should struggle to mix it with
Binocular and Celestial Halo. Former winners Brave
Inca (33/1 with VC) and Sublimity (general 16/1)
will give it their all and there won’t be a more
popular winner if the former wins but surely it’s
beyond them.
