If, by this stage, Cheltenham fever hasnt
reached your outpost then perhaps its time to shut up shop
and look for a change of vocation. The 2008 Cheltenham
Festival is literally days away, although as always racing's
jewel in the crown cannot come soon enough. the betting
industry is waiting with baited breath in anticipation of a
flurry of activity during the four days of mesmerising
racing from Prestbury Park. This will be the 107th runnig of
the great festival and it wont be an exaggeration to say
that it will be bigger and better than ever before.

Over the festival period some 230,000 spectators will take
their position trackside to revel in the unique Cheltenham
atmosphere. Add to that tens of millions glued to television
screens across the world - many of them in betting shops -
and its easy top see why Cheltenham has gained such a
reputation.
As you'd expect, Cheltenham Racecourse's managing director
Edward Gillespie is thrilled to be associated with such a
special event in the sporting calendar. " The Festival is a
huge event, not just for us, but for the local economy,
which benefits from £50m that week, for the betting
industry, which will see nationwide turnover of excess of
£500 million and of course, for the owners, trainers and
jockeys to whom success here means so much, " he says. "Over
the course of the week 500 horses will be competing for £3.4
million of prize money in 25 races. Some 235,000 spectators
will be here from across Europe, assisted by 5000 staff on
duty that week, and by any measure, it is a week that is
completely unique."

As ever, the betting will take centre stage with
the Tote, for example, making 10 percent of their on course
turnover over the four days - an outstanding figure for a
racing calender that consists of over 1000 meetings. As
always the betting industry will be desperate for some of
the big names to miss out on the big prizes. Four out of the
last five Gold Cups have been won by the favourite and only
then was the sequence broken by the short priced War of
Attrition.
The 2003 Festival was remembered for the high
number of favourites that succeeded much to the detriment of
the bookmakers. Such was the disappointment that many of the
larger firms cited their poor Cheltenham performance as the
reason for lower than expected profits that year. Therefore
a good Cheltenham is crucial for the betting industry. |
