The Irish have an excellent recent record in this race and had the winner and second last year and, interestingly, four Irish horses run off their home marks here namely CLOPF, RIVER LIANE, RAISE YOUR HEART and NINETIETH MINUTE whilst BOBS PRIDE is actually off a lower mark in Britain than his Irish rating and won at Dundalk the other day.
River Liane is interesting as he was well fancied for last season's Fred Winter Hurdle but broke a blood vessel.
Of the home challenge, the novice COCKNEY TRUCKER deserves respect hailing from the Hobbs team that have twice won this race and has a recent second to boot whilst last season's unlucky second PSYCHO is another dangerous horse though Tony Martin appeared to be favouring another handicap at the meeting. Traditionally seen as the 'getting out stakes' race as the last race on the final day of the festival, organisers have placed it as the second race on Gold Cup day. We can't see the Irish leaving if they pick the winners of it though. Irish handler Tom Hogan won the event last year with 50/1 shot Silver Jaro. Although that goes against the recent Cheltenham grain as 32 of the last 34 winners have not started bigger than 16/1.
NUMIDE could be the main hope of the home defence for Gary Moore who is top class in these races and won the Greatwood Hurdle here back in November and another to interest me is SUNNYHILLBOY who has not won since coming from the rear off a slow pace to win a valuable handicap at Sandown in December for O'Neill, McManus and McCoy. |
