Many ante-post voucher holders of AINAMA will be
disappointed he was beaten in the Dovecote Hurdle
where his jumping, which was so slick on his debut,
was very poor and that is what beat him as he kept
losing ground and momentum at every flight. It was
like watching a different horse to the one that was
so fast over his hurdles on his debut. It will mean
he heads to the race beaten last time out which is
statistically not ideal as 12 of the last 13 winners
won on their most recent start.
I expect
Nicky Henderson will be furiously working on his
jumping between now and Cheltenham as it is clear he
has an engine big enough to go very close as Hebridean, who he beat easily on his debut, showed
there is nothing wrong with his form when
comfortably winning the Grade 2 Adonis Hurdle later
on the card. At least Ainama is not out of the
reckoning like the former ante-post fifth favourite
before the weekend, ZAARITO, who ran terribly at
Naas and must now be a major doubt to travel over.
Given Ireland’s record in this event, it’s hard
to look beyond the Willie Mullins trained Cousin
Vinny in the first race of the festival - if he
runs. The Carlow based handler may yet decide to opt
for the Ballymore Properties Hurdle on Day 2.
Mullins has already declared that his other runner
in the first on day one, Kempes will run with the
resilient Ruby Walsh on board. It could be a clue in
itself, but Cousin Vinny would still get the nod.
After unseating his rider at Leopardstown in the
Deloitte Hurdle, some might question whether he will
be completely right in himself on his return, but
with course form at Prestbury Park, he comes with a
ringing endorsement and is a potential satchel
emptying winner for the bookies.
CONFLICTOFINTEREST was beaten on merit in the
Dovecote Hurdle looking like a big baby so I can't
entertain him but the winner TRENCHANT is
interesting with his four-year-old allowance if this
is the aim as this win will have blown his Fred
Winter mark for which this race was meant to be his
third and final qualifying run so his victory
doubtless came as a surprise to connections.
Trenchant was previously beaten pointless by
TORPHICHEN at Sandown so David Pipe's juvenile has
been cut as a result for this race and also the
Triumph Hurdle.
The winner of that Naas race in which Zaarito
blew out was GO NATIVE who may come here (though
Meade feels he has so much speed so would be better
suited by Aintree but could take in both) and he
paid HURRICANE FLY a big compliment as he chased
home Willie Mullins' charge at Leopardstown when the
winner looked so outstanding. Hurricane Fly is said
to be doing fine from his setback but his training
regime has had to have been altered which is not
ideal and Mullins has stated a decision will be made
on Wednesday regards his Festival plans.
RED MOLONEY was shortened again after making it
three wins from three hurdling starts last week for
the Howard Johnson yard that won this race with
Arcalis.
There can be no denying how impressive he has
looked on all three occasions over timber but, for
the third time in three starts they took him to
Musselburgh which is significant as they know they
will get decent ground there on that speed-favouring
track and his Flat class would do the rest.
Cheltenham, on what is likely to be softest ground
of the week, is another matter and I could only
really consider him if the ground really dried up
which is unlikely.
In soft ground I also don't know
what he will find when under pressure as he
disappointed a number of times when expected to win
on the Flat so he may not like it up him and he
hasn't really had a test yet over hurdles.
Danger: Red Moloney was useful on the flat
for Kevin Prendergast and would have plenty of speed
for the quick 2 mile spin around Cheltenham. Howard
Johnson has a knack of turning ex-flat horses into
excellent hurdlers and his easy victory at
Musselburgh gives him solid claims.
