1994 was the last time a fav trotted away with
the spoils. While the JP McManus owned Wichita
Lineman has been well supported, the Henry Daly
trained Possol is one to note at a nice price. The
Racing Post Chase runner up to the impressive
Nacarat has good form at the course and is well
worth an each way bet.
Danger: Turning on the taps at the course to
soften the ground will be bad news. Look elsewhere. This is one race where there will be frenzied
betting interest after the weights are announced on
Wednesday. Alan King will run NENUPHAR COLLONGES who
I was surprised to hear felt he didn't stay in the
Welsh National or Blue Square Gold Cup as, like most
of us, I had him down as an out-and-out stayer. He
feels a fast run 3m on soft ground will suit him but
I would be worried about his sticky jumping at 3m
pace at a good gallop.
Paul Nicholls still has STAR DE MOHAISON and MY WILL
in the Gold Cup but, reading between the lines, I
think they may both end up here and the latter's
presence off a mark in the low 160s would put My
Will in on around a tempting looking 11st. Aintree
is the main aim and I don't think Nicholls wants to
bottom him in the Gold Cup before Aintree so I would
say it is a very strong probability he will run
here.
He thinks he is good enough to run in the Gold
Cup so is still attractively rated on 152 but I am
somewhat put off for his chances here that no winner
of a Festival handicap chase in the last decade was
rated higher than 147.
I can see My Will starting favourite here come
the day as he only lost third place in the Hennessy
on the line on his final start and Walsh is likely
to ride so he could be a trading option.
