One of the golfers that catches the eye for this week's US Tour event, the Cialis Western Open,
is Billy Mayfair at a very nice price of 66/1. He has plenty
of things going for him in this tournament. Mayfair
has already won this event, in 1995, and has an impressive five top-10 finishes this year (a big
improvement on last year), and shot a closing 5-under par 66
in last week's Barclays Classic.
Mayfair does sometimes struggle with consistency, but at
that huge price, he is definitely worth a punt this week.
If we continue at that end of the card, Australian Mark
Hensby looks a good shout at 40/1. He came in
joint third in the US Open, and will be full of
confidence coming into this tournament and could be worth a
shout at some big odds. Hensby came third in this event last
year, and there would be no surprises if he came close this
year again.
Other players who catch the eye this week are Jim Furyk at
10/1 and Scott Verplank at 25/1.
These two have all the credntials to go very well in
this tournament, but their prices are too short for my
liking, and they haven't actually won an event for a long
time, so we will overlook them this time around. Of course,
there is always Tiger Woods, who has won this in 1997, 1999 and 2003.
