Coca-Cola League Championship
Since when do Chairmen know more about football than the
managers?
If Rafa didnt want Owen then that should be the end of the
arguement, hes employed to manage and thats what hes doing.
He knows better than anyone how he wants his teams to play
and what type of player that requires.
Personally i think he would have taken Owen but not if it
meant having to break the bank and maybe hinder further
signings. In that regard i completely agree with him, £18
million or anywhere near that for Owen is £6 million too
much.
im sure Benitez would have taken him but at that price no
way and Owen wasnt prepared to take the risk of telling
Madrid its Liverpool or nothing.
Theres no question that Liverpool was his preferred
destination he said so himself, but if we couldnt agree a
fee with Madrid then im glad we didnt pay way over the odds
to fill a position that isnt really a priority anyway.
As a Newcastle fan id be much more wary of signing a player
for a huge fee who only a few days ago said he'donly sign
...
a. if Liverpool didnt want him
b. on a 1 year loan
The reaility is something like this;
A lot of people at Liverpool want him, the manager does not
think he needs him but would not refuse him if he loses no
one and maintains control of who plays.
Lots of space for conflict there but the board at liverpool
could steady the ship by agreeing with the manager that they
will buy Owen only if it is good business only and his plans
for the future remain his.
RM do not want to sell Owen but even they seldom turn down
go money. I can't see them agreeing to a fee for him which
will suit Liverpool. Why would they as it is likely to be at
least 2 million less then they have agreed with Newcastle.
On loan deal is also not what RM or Liverpool want but again
depending on the price Newcastle could force this option.
