Its once again time for the King George & QE Diamond
Stakes and this mid-summer Championship corker has attracted
the cream of the crop, and should be a real treat for racing
fans. Once again the Irish contingent are sure to be
claiming a stake on the prize. The the betting indicates
that the race will be contested by Azamour and grey Swallow.
The horse that tops this market is Azamour who is a short
price 2/1. To me this offers very little value, and there
are big doubts over the horse's stamina.
Grey Swallow looks the better choice today, at the Saturday's King George VI and QE Diamond Stakes
at Newbury. He his a current price of 10/3 and this is likely to shorten
considerably, so punters should get on now.
Of course, Grey Swallow won the Irish Derby last year and is at his best over this trip of a mile and
a half. Lets not forget his form at the Curragh. That day he beat Bago (6/1) and Ace (12/1) into
second and third, with Azamour only came in fourth.
The latter went on to beat Ace at York, but this is a
new trip for him, and proven ability to see out the trip is
simply essential as every winner in the last decade had won
over the big-race trip.
The stamina of Grey Swallow looks to have been carefully
looked at and should not be an issue here. The horse has
been saved for this race, the only question would be with
firm going, but with showers forecast, it should be no
faster than good to firm.
There are plenty of question marks about several of his
rivals,and actually the main danger could come from the
old-timer Mubtaker (25/1), who often runs his
best races at Newbury.
Oaks heroine Eswarah should not be overlooked. She scored
a success at the fillies classic at Epsom last month, with
only her third career start., and she should imprve for this
race. Although we must take into account the fillies record
here, with no winners in the last sixteen years! She will
have to be in top form just to be able to contest this one.
