England v Wales
Sa Oct 9 – 14:40 BST (BBC1)
The last time these two teams met Bobby Robson was in charge
of England and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, but don't
expect the twenty year gap to buck any trends! Since 1950,
England have won 21 out of their 35 meetings, suffering only
four defeats, and on Saturday David Beckham is confidently
expected to lead his side to victory No.22 on his return to
Old Trafford. On the plus side for Wales, this match will
feel like a Premiership game in all but name, being played
on a ground, and against players, they are familiar with.
However, after the high of beating Italy in Euro 2004 qualification,
their form has dipped alarmingly, having now gone eight competitive
games without a win. That will be a difficult habit to shake
off against an England team with tremendous strength in depth.
The possible return of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell will
add a touch of class to the England back four.
In the 17 matches these two have played together, England
have only lost twice, one of those a meaningless friendly
to Australia. Wayne Rooney is expected to make his first start
for England since his dazzling Euro 2004 display, and he could
not have been more impressive on his debut for United. After
a rather 'flat' display against Boro, he can be expected to
raise his game for the big occasion, and provide that much
needed midfield to strikers link. Rooney has already been
assured of his starting spot, but Michael Owen must fight
off the challenge of Jermain Defoe, as well as any injury
doubts, before taking up his position as England's No.1 striker.
He will relish the chance to answer his critics on Saturday.
The injury to Steven Gerrard may be a blow for England, but
the suspension of Robbie Savage, allied with the injuries
to Robert Page and Gareth Taylor, is a much bigger loss for
Wales, and they could struggle without them. Backing England
is rarely the value call, but there cannot be too many better
2/5 shots this weekend!
