Horse Racing: Newbury Game Spirit Chase

As you'd expect, this weekend's racing provides us with more Cheltenham pointers, none more so than the anticipated clash of Champion Chase contenders Well Chief and Azertyuiop in Newbury's Game Spirit Chase (3.35). At this stage of the season, I would expect the Pipe-trained Well Chief to have the edge in fitness over his main rival, with the latter's trainer Paul Nicholls publicly stating this week that his charge is likely to need this race in the run-up to Cheltenham. The Aon Chase (2.25) has a similar scenario, in that the Nicholl's-trained Strong Flow is unlikely to be near his best on his first chase start since December 2003, leaving the way for Pipe's Celestial Gold to enhance his Gold Cup credentials.

Victories for both Pipe runners would see their current Cheltenham prices contract even further from 5/2 and 14/1 respectively. On the same card, the Tote Gold Trophy (3.00) looks far more competitive, but here again Pipe looks the trainer to concentrate on, with several leading fancies entered at this stage. His Tamarinbleu could well defy a hike in the weights for his impressive win at Sandown last month (the 2nd Self Defense boosted the form last Saturday), however, at much bigger odds, I like the look of stable mate Desert Air at 33/1, who caught the eye when 4th in the same race last time out. Warwick's televised card will also feature several Cheltenham aspirants, including leading Arkle fancy My Will, who will be attempting to give his trainer a fifth win in the last six runnings of the Kingmaker Novice Chase (2.10).

In the handicap chase (3.55), the in-form stable of Venetia Williams can strike with the progressive Noisetine. Back a winner at 4/1 or bigger in either of the six Channel 4 races this weekend, and we'll give you a free bet to the same stake (up to £50) on the next live race. Weekend tips: Newbury - Well Chief (3.35); Celestial Gold (2.25); Desert Air (3.00) Warwick - My Will (2.10); Noisetine (3.55)
