IT is difficult to levy any kind of criticism at
Chelsea boss Jose Mourjnho.
Two trophies in his first year at Chelsea. A defence
which let in just 15 goals throughout last season. Apart
from all that, he won the Champions League with Porto.
PORTO! But one question still remains. What exactly does
he see in Didier Drogba?
Or to put it another way, what exactly did he see to
make him think he was worth £24million?
This is a bloke who carved his reputation terrorising
Newcastle’s defence in the Uefa Cup. As all this
involved was getting the better of Titus Bramble, you
can see why doubts might start to appear.
Any defender in the country would rather be faced
with him than a pocket dynamo like Rooney, a flying
machine like Henry or a Silent assassin like Shearer.
Yet bookies make the ivory Coast striker 11-2 joint
favourite (with Henry) to be the Premiership’s top
scorer at the end of August.
Henry will get his share early on, but the real interest
in this market lies with one of his colleagues.
Last August, with the sun on his back, Jose Reyes was in
screaming form. Goals, assists and looking every inch
the £17m player Arsene Wenger made him.
And he rewarded those who backed him at 40-1 to be the
Premiership player of the month.
The Spaniard is 20-1 to finish August as leading scorer.
With the sun out and homesickness behind him, that is
the value.
One final thought, Celtic, confidence in shreds after
being hammered 5-0 in Europe in midweek, tomorrow travel
to Motherwell where they lured away last season’s league
title. Motherwell are 6/1 to win.
Just thought you’d like to know.
