As always in this race, the Irish contingent are very
strong, but this year it is incredible. There are odds of
11/10 that the winning dog will have been trained in
Ireland!
The main contender for the crown is Droopy's Maldini, who
does offer a nice punt as an 8/1 favourite but I'm not so
sure his style suits this course as well as the early paced
railers, and it may be bette to look for a runner who is at
his best running wide.
One such is Siesta Frisby, who offers great value at 16/1.
He actually clocked 28.48 over
course and distance last week, which would have been
enough to win six of the last seven Derby finals!
It remains to be seen how fit the dog is right now - his
trainer Mick Puzey, describes him as only being 85%
fit right now, but this gives him time to improve and peak
as the competition progresses, culminating hopefully in a
July 2nd Final.
Some good value can be found further down the card - At
40/1 last year's runner-up Big Freeze looks a good value bet
each way. He is another, who should improve his fitness
also, while Westmead Hawk's (33/1)
brilliant middle pace can see him go a long way too.
