But I still left the track smiling after Rising Cross saw
off two highly regarded colts in the conditions race.
I was fully expecting Rising Cross to finish last of the
four but she ran an absolute blinder after stumbling so
badly at the start that Jamie Spencer almost fell off. She
harried the Stoute runner all the way and eventually he got
fed up but when Charlton’s horse came at her she dug deep
prompting Jamie Spencer declaring her one of the toughest
horses he has ridden.

This son of Barathea has an unusual pedigree because there
are winners over all types of distances in the family. That
means there are a lot of options available for him. He was
beaten at Salisbury on his second start but that wasn’t a
disgrace because Charlie Egerton’s winner (Humungous) is
well regarded. Opera Cape’s success in the Goodwood maiden
on Saturday completed a super double after Group Captain’s
victory. I almost made entries in the Champagne Stakes at
Goodwood and Doncaster but he’ll stifi have some posh
engagements later in the season.
Salamanca 3 ch f We’ve had a frustrating year with her. We
ran her in the Fred Darling on her reappearance but that
confused us for the rest of the campaign. The ground was
soft, so we thought that was the reason behind the defeat.
But she had been short of work having been kicked a couple
of weeks earlier, and just got tired. She performed much
better when coming back to form with a bang over 7f at
Newmarket last month. She also ran well on good to soft
ground at Glorious Goodwood when second to Tagula Sunrise.
I’ll probably keep her to handicaps but it would be great to
gain some black type.
