ICC Champions Trophy

Starts Fr Sep 10

This event, second only to the World Cup in terms of quality, should make for some exciting cricket over the course of the 16 days of the competition. The winners of the four groups will advance to the semi-final stage, with favourites Australia arguably in the hardest of all, Group A, which should go down to a match against their rivals New Zealand on September 16th. Granted the World Champions have won 13 of their last 16 contests, including two against England this summer, but at 11/8 in our outright market look too short considering that there is a chance that the Kiwis could upset them.

The winner of Group A would be almost certainly be up against either England or Sri Lanka in the semi's, with England coming in for support since their victory over India in the Nat west Challenge. Michael Vaughan's men were certainly impressive in the first two matches there, and will have the assistance of Andrew Flintoff, who missed England's defeat by India at the weekend. There is no doubting the importance of Flintoff to England's chances, with the all-rounder averaging a phenomenal 85.5 runs in his last 14 one-day internationals over the past twelve months.

He look's good value at 5/1 on our 'Top England Batsman' market, although England could be found wanting in the latter stages of the competition. In the other half of the draw South Africa look to have the easiest Group task, and then would be required to play either India or Pakistan in the other semi. The match between the latter two at Edgbaston on September 19th should be a highly charged encounter, with India perhaps just getting the edge before succumbing to the Proteas. To summarise, at this stage South Africa look worth an each way interest at 13/2, with a speculative wager on New Zealand at 9/1 in the hope they can do us a favour by beating Australia.
