Greyhounds: Irish Derby
English Derby winner Westmead Hawk looks to be the one to
beat in the Irish Derby as he looked impressive as he won in
the quarter finals stage. An incredibly well-trained animal,
the dog does look to be sheer class and a delight to the
entire sport.
The wide sweeping bends of Shelbourne Park were always
going to suit the Wimbledon hero but, understandably, he has
taken time to acclimatise. The beauty of the Hawk is the
draw is not overly important to him as he almost always
breaks a length or two behind.
Then its a case of picking his way through the field,
which he does more often than not, regardless of the class
he's facing. Westmead Hawk's Saturday's performance was by
far his best performance to date, and he's clearly coming
into top form at precisely the right time.
As the sole wide seed in Saturday's first semi, he could see
his neighbour in trap five, Ballymac Niloc, turn sharply
left at the first bend, a move that could snowball and
affect his main rival in the race (and the competition),
Droopys Maldini.
He will avoid trouble at the first two bends as he will
be at least 2 lengths off the fast starting trio in 2-4. He
can then make his move and with any trouble ahead, he should
pick everything off. That should allow the Hawk to come
round his field and fire down the home stretch in the manner
that we're accustomed to. He is 5/4 to win on Saturday, and
5/2 in the outright market.
Get on the Hawk!
Recommendation: Westmead Hawk @ 5/4 (semi final) &
5/2 (outright)
