Colin Montgomerie produced his best performance in a Major
when finishing second in the Open three weeks ago, and the
Scot is taken to go one better in the Johnnie Walker
Championship at Gleneagles from Thursday.
Monty has had a tough few years both on and off the course
with his form dipping so much he missed out on the Masters
this season. However, rune top 11 finishes this term,
including three free online bets runners-up spots, suggest that Monty is
doing something right at last.
His new role of ‘Chairman of the Championship’ at Gleneagles
for this tournament would suggest he has prepared well for
the event and as always he’ll have huge support from the
Scottish galleries. The layout (par 72, 7136 yards) suits
Monty as fourth and 22nd places in two starts at the
Centenary course prove.
Pierre Fulke is another who has struggled in the past few
seasons, mainly because of injury.
This term he took a couple of months off to concentrate
on his course design projects, but declared he was playing
‘better than I’ve ever played’ during last week’s
Scandinavian Masters. His share of fifth place was his best
of the season and as a former winner at Gleneagles (2000)
you cannot rule him out.
Paul Broadhurst is the last member of the staking plan. The
former European Ryder Cup player is enjoying a renaissance
this term, claiming an admittedly fortunate win in Portugal
and registering eight top 25 finishes (including 11th last
week). Broadhurst finished third at Gleneagles in 2003.
