Le Championnat Feb 2008
We take a look at the French Le Championnat, and dig out
the best value as the season moves towards the business end.
Back in the summer Alain Perrin, then the newly appointed
manage of Lyon, was a better manager than his unsuccessful
spell at Portsmouth suggested and that they would be worth
backing to win a seventh consecutive league title. Lyon were
available at around 1.5 but the time has now come to lay off
and, even if you didn't back them at short odds, they might
be worth opposing in this market at their current lay price
of 1.23. They did not start well at the beginning of the
season, but over the last few months their form has declined
to the extent that they have only won three of their last
eight games.
The biggest problem with finding an alternative in this
division is that below Lyon, the competition is very
compressed in terms of the relative strength of the teams.
There is little between the top rated Lyon and Metz, who are
hopelessly adrift in the league table, and they have long
since been 1.01 in the relegation betting.
While Lyon are easily opposed favourites, Bordeaux,
currently in second place, have been more impressive in
recent weeks and are currently available to back at 8.4 on
the exchanges. Instead however, the top three finsish market
might be the place to play, although liquidity is so low it
will be difficult in getting your bets matched. Nancy
currently reside in third place but are in terrible form,
having won only once in Le Championanat since November.
There are a number of sides that can mount serious
challenges with a big fourteen games to play. If you can get
a lay matched at around 2.7 or lower this does look like
being a decent bet.
