Spotlight: Unraced at two but always held in high regard,
was having only his second start when winning a four runner
race in Leopardstown on King George day last year. Wasn’t
disgraced on his first try at a G1, finishing fifth to Rakti
with Soviet Song, Diamond Green, Antonius Pius and Norse
Dancer behind him.
A respectable fourth to Bago on his seasonal reappearance he
ran another fine race to finish third, beaten a length, in
the Tattersalls Gold Cup. He produced another solid effort
at York, giving AZAMOUR a fright in the Prince of Wales's
Stakes.
Clearly a classy horse who could improve for the step up in
trip and there’s not much between him and the market
principles.
Powerful stables Number one hope and given the season
Ballydoyle have enjoyed its hard to see him going off
shorter than the 14s currently available.
Looks a good each way bet
Trainer Said: “He is in good shape and what he wants is fast
ground although nobody wants it firm. The reason why we have
chosen the King George is to get fast going when we try him
over a mile and a half for the first time.
We hope Azamour will stay, but racing is littered with
trainers and jockeys who believe a horse will stay and then
being proved wrong.
There will be some tough opposition out there. Grey Swallow
looked good in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and is an Irish
Derby winner - so he’s proven over the distance.
If Bago returns to his Arc form then he will take some
beating, as will Yeats if he reproduces his Coronation Cup
run. His stable companion Ace was not that far behind us at
York and the filly (Eswarah) is an interesting runner. It is
boiling up into a very hot race.”

A lot depends on what the handicapper does after Saturday’s
win at Good-wood. I hadn’t been getting him right and he was
a very unlucky two-year-old. We sold him for seventy grand,
which wasn’t bad for a maiden after eight starts, but he had
a wind problem and we got him back. He won on the
all-weather in March and we thought everything was going to
be fine but the stable had a quiet period afterwards. He ran
very badly at Newmarket on his next start and we couldn’t
work him out. He came back to form with a bang in a decent
race at Sandown last month but hated the turns at Windsor
next time. He loved the ground at Goodwood last week because
it wasn’t too soft and he seems to thrive when conditions
are like that
Whisper was making the point last night on MSN that it was
very similar to Yesterday V. Six Perfections in the Irish
1000 Guineas. He out foxed Johnny that day as well.
Yesterday never won again and Six Perfections rounded off
the year with the Breeders Cup mile in the bag! I was on
O’Briens e/w @ 25s a few weeks ago as I knew Oratorio wasn’t
going to line up.
If its soft I’d be surprised if Azamour turned up in France,
Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders Cup Turf are his most
likely targets; Which is kind of annoying for me because I
backed him to win the King George and the Arc in a double
before the Royal Meeting.
