Northern Trust Open Feb 2008
So far this season the vast majority of the big names in
golf have yet to show their hand. Either they have beeen
unbale to stop the juggernaut that is Tiger Woods, or they
have failed to take advantage when the World No.1 has been
absent. Going into the last round of tournaments across the
globe, of the top 30 in the world (excluding Woods) only
two have managed to post a victory.
One of those, Adam Scott, is the man to follow in this
weeks Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club,
California.
The Australian's final round 61 to win the Qatar Masters
last month was as good as anything Woods could have done,
and after a disappointing 2007, it hopefully signified the
shape of things to come this year.
His triumph at Doha, only only his second start of the
season, should not come as a surprise. Scott revealed he had
been working on or two things over the winter months and, as
a former winner in the Gulf state, he did have some previous
form at the venue.
He has form at this weeks par 71, 7279 yard venue too,
that went under the Nissan Open banner for more than a
decade. Scott is a former winner of this well established
event. He won it on his first attempt back in 2005 and
followed up by claiming second spot a year later. His
putting looks to have improved this season and he could well
be the player to push tiger in the Majors this year. This
week he looks a solid each way selection.
Rory Sabbatini could also be a player to take on Woods
this season, and although he hasn't managed to win so far in
2008, two top three efforts in four starts on the PGA Tour
have kept each way backers happy and he may get that elusive
win this week. the South African is still getting used to
new equipment and interestingly, he has left off the AT&T
Pebble Beach tournament from his schedule - he has played it
in the past - so should come into the Northern Trust Open
fresh. It's a tournament in which Sabbatini has done well in
the past - he won at the Riviera Country Club in 2006, was
runner up in 2002 and can boast five top 15 finishes in
eight starts there.
European no.1 Lee Westwood should also be backed to go
well. Fifth in 2006 and 15th in 2002, Westwood has performed
well at the west coast track in the past.
