Rugby Union: Lions First Test

Sa Jun 25 – 8.10 BST (SS1)

Well, all the warm up matches have now been completed,  and now the Lions have to face the might of the All Blacks. They will be confident coming into the game, after beating Southland by 26-16, but will be disappointed not to have won by a bigger margin after a Gavin Henson inspired first 20 minutes.

Then Lions did seem to make a few too many errors at the breakdown in that game however, and needed a last-minute penalty to settle the outcome.  The majority of bookmakers give the lions an 8.5-9 point start in the match, and most will be betting in running.

Clive Woodward has certainly gone out on a limb, changing tactics by including Jonny Wilkinson at no.12 in place of Gavin Henson. To me, this seems like a foolish move, as Henson is the man in form at the moment, and the manager has also included eight of the English players that lifted the Rugby World Cup. I

For me, this is the wrong move, as alot of those players are not the players they once were. Lets not forget England's performance in the Six Nations, and I feel that the Lions will come unstuck in this game. To omit Henson who is a great attacking strength, and gives the team a number of differing options only cements my theory that the All Blacks will run riot here today. Betting wise, the Lions are 10/11 with a +9 handicap. On recent performances, and team selection, the handicap looks a little short however.

The Lions are 5/2 for the three-Test series, with the All Blacks at a miserly 2/7.

Recommendation:  New Zealand (-9.0) @ 10/11
