Rising Cross was running in the Group 3 at Goodwood so I took the family for what was possibly going to be my finest hour in racing.
The day started off with two big field handicaps that I wanted to get stuck into and I included the winner at big prices in each. However, because of the number of kids running around the place I did not have time to check with Betfair that all the bets had been matched.
The Law of Sod struck big time and I only got 30 per cent of my stake on Climate Change who was given a cool ride by Richard Hughes who did not ifinch at all about his number one draw and brought his horse from last to first in terrific style.
The other one, Danehill Dazzler, was the real sickener as I hardly got anything on it yet was leaping around like a lunatic when it won.
It was only when I checked with the exchange that I realised I had only won enough for a cup of tea.
I did get some compensation for my embarrassment if not my money, however, as in the next race trainer Jeremy Noseda did exactly the same thing and was punching the air in celebration when Majors Cast went past the post in the Celebration Mile.
beaten and he was celebrating his win in good style.
