25% sell on clause = £4.25 million and we can sign him for
£12 million next year so in fact we could get him for a net
£7.75 million next season which is less than what we sold
him for
they wanted him but not at any price. I thought was
obvious? Whether you call it being cautious or simply
refusing to pay that much over the odds for a player, maybe
it would have meant the manager couldn't pursue other
targets.
I've never said we weren't interested in Owen because the
fact we talked to him and bid for him obviously shows we
were, but we were never going to pay much more than £10 -
£12 million and that was never going to be accepted by
Madrid with a £17million offer on the table.
the last minute bid is probabaly an improved offer from £10
million to £12 million or something that is still
unacceptable. Owen played this badly by talking to newcastle
had he insisted to Madrid its Liverpool or nothing im sure
something would have been sorted out.
But that was obviously a huge gamble to take in a world cup
season, had Madrid called his bluff he would have found
himself in the reserves for at least 6 months.
