Soccer: The Premiership: Birmingham,
Blackburn Rovers
Birmingham City
Last year: 12th
Ground: StAndrews
Capacity: 30,009
Manager: Steve Bruce
(44 months: W53, D46, L55)
We say: 13th 700-1
SINCE winning the Play- Off final in 2002, Birmingham have
been hard at work establishing themselves as a mid-table
Premiership side.
Steve Bruce has made some interesting signings, including
Nicky Butt on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle and
Mikael Forsell, prolific for the Blues during a season on
loan two years ago.
Walter Pandiani has made the switch from Deportivo on a
permanent basis after a successful loan period at the
tail-end of last season, and Charlton’s Jason Euell is also
a target, giving Bruce a wealth of attacking options.
That should go some way towards solving the Blues’ biggest
problem. Only Blackburn and West Brom scored fewer goals
than Bruce’s side last term and they’ve found scoring hard
work since winning promotion, averaging just 1.09 goals per
game in three seasons in the top flight.
Blackburn Rovers
Last year: 15th
Ground: Ewood Park
Capacity: 31,367
Manager: Mark Hughes
(53 months: W13, D16, L12)
We say: 14th 1500-1
AN FA CUP semi-final appearance was the highlight of a
dismal season for Rovers that saw them score just 32 goals
and finish 15th.
That ended in disappointment too as a pair of late Robin van
Persie goals killed off the tie and sent Arsenal on their
way to Cardiff at Rovers’ expense.
Manager Graeme Souness had left by the middle of September
to be replaced by Mark Hughes, successful as manager of
Wales but a novice on the club scene, and after a win in his
first game at the helm, it was almost December before they
registered their second victory. But if they found it difficult to win, Hughes’ side were
also tough to beat even if the physical side of their game
drew criticism from opponents.
They’re unlikely to pull up any trees this season (10-1 for
the drop), but Craig Bellamy will provide some much-needed
creativity.
