Soccer: The Premiership: Bolton, Charlton
Bolton Wanderers
Last year: 6th
Ground: Reebok Stadium
Capacity: 28,723
Manager: Sam Allardyce
We say: 5th 500-1
THANKS to a sixth-place finish, Bolton will play in
Europe for the first time in their 131-year history this
season, and that’s a major achievement for Sam Allardyce.
It’s the Uefa Cup, but it might have been the Champions
League, as the Trotters were in the hunt for fourth place
for much of the season.
It represents a fresh challenge for Allardyce, surely
one of the best managers in the division, but he hasn’t
found it easy to bring in new faces for Wanderers’ biggest
season since Nat Lofthouse was a Trotter.
So far, Jared Borgetti, Mexico’s leading goalscorer, is
the only capture although Senegal defender Abdoulaye Faye
will join on loan from Lens for a season, and Allardyce is
hopeful that Besiktas’ Spanish international Juanfran will
become an-other loanee.
They might be worth backing for a top-ten finish at 10-11
with Bet365.
Charlton
Last year: 11th
Ground: The Valley
Capacity: 26,875
Manager: A/an Curbishley
(169 months: W257, 0177, L240)
Wesay: 11th 1000-1
CHARLTON’S end of season collapse has become something of an
institution in their corner of southeast London, and they
kept up the tradition last term, winning just once after the
end of January.
They slipped from Uefa Cup contention to 11th, but good work
early in the season meant they were never in danger of
getting sucked into the relegation battle. The Addicks are
8-1 to go down this time.
Alan Curbishley has some injuries to contend with in the
opening weeks. Keeper Dean Kiely has a broken finger and
Jason Euell - a Birmingham transfer target - a dislocated
shoulder. Both may miss up to six weeks.
On a positive note, Darren Bent might be a good signing. He
scored 19 in the Championship for Ipswich last term whilst
Chariton’s top marksman, Shaun Bartlett, managed just six in
the top flight.
