Soccer: The Premiership: Chelsea, Everton
Chelsea
Last year: Champions
Ground: Stamford Bridge
Capacity: 42,420
Manager: Jose Mourinho
We say: Champions 8-11
JOSE MOURINHO’S first season in England went well even
by his own exacting standards.
Failure in the Champions League was a disappointment, but a
League and League Cup double was surely just the first
dividend on Roman Abramovich’s investment.
Their success was based on a sound defence -just 15 league
goals conceded - but when Arjen Robben came into the side,
the Blues were transformed from dowdy 1-0 merchants into
free-scoring fantasists.
Frank Lampard top scored (15-2 to be top midfield
goalscorer with the Tote), but there were goals throughout
the team and with Heman Crespo back in the fold after a good
season in Milan, Chelsea should be even more potent going
forward.
With the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips on board for the new
season, it’s easy to see why they’re odds-on to retain the
title.
Everton
Last year: 4th
Ground: Goodison Park
Capacity: 40,170
Manager: David Mo yes
(41 months: W55, 032, L52)
We Say: 10th 300-1
WHAT a difference a year makes! This time last August,
Everton were seemingly in chaos, David Moyes was
second-favourite in the sack race and the Toffees were 7-2
for the drop.
Moyes’ side finished fourth to qualify for the Champions
League and this time they’re a best-priced 14-1 to repeat
the trick in the betting ‘without the big four’.
However, even with the carrot of mixing it with Europe’s
finest, Moyes has had mixed fortunes in bringing new faces
to Goodison.
He’s added Phil Neville, Per Kroldrup and Simon Davies to
the squad, and Mikel Arteta has inked a deal after a
successful loan from Real Sociedad last term, but Moyes’
efforts to lure Andy Johnson from Crystal Palace ended in
failure.
Realistically, a top-half finish would be a good result in
the context of the last few seasons.
