Soccer: The Premiership: Fulham,
Liverpool
Fulham
Last year: 13th
Ground: Craven Cottage
Capacity: 19,250
Manager: Chris Coleman
(28 months: W37, 023, L37)
We say: 15th 1500-1
10-1 FOR the drop last term, Fulham are 4-1 to go down
this season - if they go much shorter, they may be worth
laying on the exchanges.
Of course Andy Cole, now at Man City, will be a big loss.
His best days may be behind him, but he was the Cottagers’
top scorer last term and Luis Boa Morte, next on the list
with eight, is on Newcastle’s wanted list.
However, Heidar Helguson scored 20 times for a struggling
Watford, and if he can reproduce some of that form in the
Premiership, the Iceland international will be a good buy.
Edwin van der Sar has gone to Manchester too, albeit to
the red half. He has been perhaps Fuiham’s most consistent
performer in recent years and is replaced by Jaroslav Drobny,
a Czech who has been playing for Panionios in Greece.
We can probably expect more of the same this season - a
mid-table finish after flirting with the drop.
Liverpool
Last year: 5th
Ground: Anfield
Capacity: 45,362
Manager: Rafael Benitez
(14 months: W33, D12, L19)
We say: 3rd 20-1
LIVERPOOL look to be on course for the Champions League
proper without hitting top gear yet, but their appearance at
this early stage of affairs serves as a timely reminder of
the way they stuttered in the Premiership while conquering
Europe.
The Merseysiders were hard to catch right in the
Premiership, but it would be a surprise if they didn’t
improve this term.
Rafael Benitez has completed a number of new signings this
summer covering every area of the pitch from goalkeeper
(Jose Reina) to centre forward (Peter Crouch) but Steven
Gerrard’s decision to stay might be the most important team
news from the close season, even if Michael Owen makes an
improbable return to Anfleld.
Rafa’s side is a work in progress, and while the Reds could
conceivably challenge for third, they look a little short in
the betting.
