Soccer: The Premiership: Tottenham, West
Brom
Tottenham
Last year: 9th
Ground: White Hart Lane
Capacity: 36,236
Manager: Martin Jo!
We say: 7th 200-1
WHITE HART LANE may not have been a sufficiently
upwardly-mobile workplace for Frank Arnesen but Spurs gaffer
Martin Jol has continued to spend in an effort to break into
the top six for the first time in 15 years (13-8 with
BetDirect)
Experienced Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids was his
compatriot’s sixth signing of the summer following the
capture of untried continentals Paul Stalteri and Teemu
Tainio and talented youngsters Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon
and Wayne Routledge. And the vibes must be good in the
Lilywhites’ camp if neither Robbie Keane, Jermajn Defoe or
Freddie Kanoute have plans to leave despite no guaranteed
starting berths.
Punters, though, will need more proof, the required evidence
being more wins and more goals on the road. Last year’s
tallies of five and 11 won’t be enough.
West Brom
Last year: 17th
Ground: The Hawthorns
Capacity: 27,000
Manager: Bryan Robson
We say: 16th 5000-1
THE BAGGIES became the first team to beat the Premiership
drop in May after being bottom at Christmas thanks to a
final day win over Portsmouth at the Hawthorns
But few are deluding themselves that another season of
struggle is not on the way, least of all zero -to-hero
manager Bryan Robson who sees goals as the key to survival.
Last term’s 36 is unlikely to be enough.
He has added Diomansy Kamara to the four out-and-out
strikers already on the books and made noises about using
Hungarian playmaker Zoltan Gera in an advanced role too.
Losing Kieran Richardson is a blow however.
Robson has not been negligent in addressing matters in their
own half of the field - injury-prone cat Chris Kirkland has
much to prove on a season-long loan while Darren Carter and
Steve Watson are good signings.
