Shergar Cup Mile
Sa Aug 7 - 14.45 Ascot
At 10f, I would definitely rate Azamour the best horse in
Europe, at 12f I'm yet to be convinced.
As I said earlier the course record in pointless, this was
the only G1(G3 highest rated race) to take place over that
distance at Newbury since 1998. You would expect any half
decent G1 animal to smash this record.
Also, no one has mentioned that in comparison with the 0-95
all age handicap won by Bay Story Azamour's time isn't all
that favourable either, probably due to the extraordinary
early pace in the G1. As for Azamour quickening he was
slower than Bay Story from the 3f to the 1f marker.
I like Azamour alot, and over 10f he is a monster however,
imo, he still has plenty to prove at 12f imo. Hopefully we
will get an opportunity to do this in the Arc or the BCC.
Yes an encouraging run from the French beast no doubt and
if the ground goes soft on Arc day I would back him to
reverse the form! No question Azamour was best on the day
but 2moro is another day, as they say...
One thing I will say is that I think Gillet was
overcompensating somewhat after giving the horse too much to
do the race before at Saint-Cloud. Under normal
circumstances he would have been sitting where Azamour was.
He probably was trying to ensure that a repeat didn't happen
and ultimately ended up overdoing it. The horse was staying
on rather than running on as we know he can.
I am trading Bago for the Arc and am looking to end up with
a nice sum of green on him as I still reckon he can win the
race. With Grey Swallow looking an unlikely runner and
Azamour no certainty things look ok at worst after that run.
