England are forced to give up 30 points on the handicap in the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield on Saturday and after the professional performance against Italy last weekend, youd have to be on the away side at 10/11.
Elsewhere France are expected to dispose of Italy with considerable ease, whilst the Ireland v Wales match should be cracker. The Welsh are 50/1 outsiders for the Grand Slam and the Irish will be hoping to get points on the board after never getting a look against the French.
number of tries is not the only measure; but I just wanted to nail the myth before it restarted. (Duckham was thirty years ago !) This year the backs have been ineffective, but not for lack of trying - (they refused to kick the points against Ireland when only six points behind; with any other referee the gamble could have been applauded). You can blame injuries, but not Sir Clive !
Another stereotype - "France play with flair". Can anyone remember the last time ? Semi-final versus New Zealand was magnificent, but that was years ago. France kicked six penalties against England. When was the last time ANY team kicked six penalties in a match ?
Anyway, back to your point; no Sir Clive won't pick out of form or injured players on reputation. Surely he is the one guy who has proved his judgement.
Someone asked the question whether you'd rather watch the Lions win 2-1 winning ugly or losing 2-1 playing great open rugby. Personally id rather the latter, sport is built up to be so important and while it is for the players involved, as a fan all i want to watch is a good exciting game of rugby. If the Lions play a kicking game based around a huge forward pack, then i for one will be cheering for the All Blacks.
Wales have shown that you can take on the AB's at their own game and almost beat them, whos to say by adding the best from England, Ireland and Scotland to these Welsh players that wouldnt be enough to win?
However i do fear that Woodward being the typeof guy he is will approach the tour with a win at all costs attitude. If this is the way he approaches things he'd better hope he wins, becasue if they LOSE playing ugly then his reputation will be in tatters, especially when you consider he has at his disposal some of the most exciting set of backs and forwards i can remember in terms of skill levels.
