It would be wrong to read too much into England's defeat
by South Africa A at the weekend, and they are fancied to
get off to a flyer when the 1st Test which gets under way
at St George on Friday morning (08.00 start). That result
could well act as a wake-up call for Michael Vaughan's side,
who have won 10 of their last 11 tests, rising to second in
the ICC rankings as a result. South Africa in contrast have
been in poor form, have serious selection problems, and could
easily find themselves jaded after a whistle-stop tour of
India. So, on a pitch which has tended to produce good competitive
matches with enough help for the bowlers (principally Steve
Harmison), and with the weather set fair, England look worth
a bet at 13/8 to make a winning start. They can also be backed

fair considering that both sides only draw one game in five
