The big news for this race is that big favourite Scorpion, who opened antepost at  a nice 3/1 has been backed in to a shortish looking evens. The main reason for this is his impressive second place in the Irish Derby, and this has been backed up by some equally impressive wins in France, where he was racing in Group 1 company.

However, evens looks a tad to short to be backing, as we are really going on past performances, and are really trusting the horse's stamina. So I think we can overlook Scorpion on this occasion. The value bet looks to be The Geezer. This David Elsworth horse is trading at around 6/1 and looks to be the next best pick. After wins at Goodwood and Haydock, The Geezer looks to have all the credentials to go close here. He did come second when beaten by Hard Top in his last trip at York's Great Voltigeur, which is a good indicator for the St Leger.

If The Geezer can continue that form, then he will go very close, and rain is forecast will will suit him.

Recommendation:  The Geezer @ 6/1

On the same card, we look to the 1m Handicap at 2.15 , and Calcutta should be able to repeat his win in 2004, a 5lb lower mark should benefit him here.

The horse is in form after impressing at the York Dante meeting, and Barry Hill's horse should go close here today.

Recommendation: Calcutta
