The Open Championship, Royal Troon GC
So today's 19th Hole insight is that around 80% of
Tiger's wins have come on par 72 courses.
Does he mention that around 80% of Tiger's starts are on par
72 courses? No. In fact the only par 70 tracks he plays
regularly outside of the majors are Las Colinas (where he's
won, and has been placed four times) and Firestone (where he
'always' wins).
Would you be surprised to find that Goosen's schedule
usually includes a bigger proportion of par 70 and 71
courses?
Does it matter that 23% of Goosen's starts in America are on
par 70s, but 37% of his missed cuts are on par 70s?
(based on the last five years, because I haven't the time to
go further back.)
My general point is that, while there might be useful
information hidden in that table, he hasn't produced the
evidence to support it, and that he passes off these
half-researched ideas as 'facts' week after week. The basic
stat about Tiger may not be earth-shattering but I'm still
interested about the win rates for his rivals.
For example, less than half of Goosen's wins have come on
par 72s so that could perhaps tip the balance if he's a
borderline punt one week.
And, of course, Tiger has never won a Major on a par 70.
Coincidence? Probably not.
Use the article as a basis for argument and research rather
than just slagging it off.
P.S. I have no connection with the writer involved!
Incidentally, Tiger's US Open in 2002 was on a par 70.
