By this time some of the journalists and sp reporters covering
the meeting had started to arrive and, after exchanging the usual
pleasantries and greetings I was left to carry Ofl with What I was

identify the runners for the meeting ahead I backed the second

It was the next race at Thirsk that did it. I didn’t have much on
but I still managed to back Prince Namici at an average of 100-1,
and when he took it up a furlong out I figured I had finally got out
of jail.
Unfortunately, he was mowed down by Dunn Deal close home and beaten
a neck. My newspaper hit the floor and it was pretty clear to all
that I had come close to something.
Fellow punters know how to react to this sort of thing, and most
people in the room acknowledged my bad luck and didn’t dwell. Thommo,
however, asked me if I had backed the second! I felt like telling
him that I had my proverbials on the winner and was just annoyed
that the Securicor van had not turned up to enable me to carry the
readies home!
But no, I told him that I had indeed backed the second and it was
100-1 thinking that would be enough!
“It’s terrible when that happens,” was the reply, which sounded
sincere enough but left me wondering how many 100-1 seconds he
backs.
I sat back down waiting for the shakes to subside and praying that
no one would ask me if I was on each-way! Some chance! There are few
certainties in racing but if I could have a bet on who would have
asked that one I would be quids in. Sure enough the question came,
and the favourite did oblige. For the next five minutes I spent the
time wondering which orifice - and how many coloured pencils I was
going to stick there. It would certainly have made the walk to the
commentary box fairly uncomfortable if I had managed t.
