THE big four-bend finals keep on coining our way
and this week it’s the turn of the Sussex Cup at Hove on
Thursday night.
Last week, the semi-finals saw us lose BallymaC Kewell,
Baflybrazil Hero and Kyle-grove Flight, but the final six
remains one packed full of quality and promise.
The biggest impression on this famous competition has been
made by local bitch Shelbourne Nina. Her early pace and
relentless gallop make her home track absolutely perfect for
her and she has once again drawn the prime slot in trap six.
The difference this time around is that the daughter of
Knockeevan Star has two fellow wide seeds to deal with in
BaIlymaC Pires (trap four) and Loughteen Flyer (trap five).
So when looking at the all-important make-up of the contest
I was quite surprised to see that she has been put in as low
as 7-4 joint favourite with Corals alongside Pires.
Sure her sectional of 4.l5secs was sparkling last week, but
she will have to reproduce such a start again -something she
hasn’t done on a regular basis before this competition.
Remember, her two fellow wide seeds both recorded 4.l8secs
splits, so there is absolutely no room for error at trap
release for the six bitch and I suspect she could find her
first slice of trouble in the
competition at the most important stage, 50 7-4 would not be
for me.
Whereas Loughteen Flyer is a definitive wide seed, Pires is
more of as a middle runner so of the three, in relative
terms, he has arguably the best draw of the trio.
Sri Diamond 5 b g I’m really looking forward to him coming
back. He is so well handicapped on turf, so you should be
looking out for him. I want to get him started because he
has a lot of ability. He won on fast ground as a
two-year-old before winning on the All-Weather. You’ll be
seeing him over im and im 2f on decent ground. This is
probably one for the notebook, so keep him in mind.
AIDAN O’BRIEN’S Muffins Bay is obviously a good traveller
and, passport in his back pocket, he heads for England for
the third time in a row to contest the Petros Rose of
Lancaster Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.
His last two outings have been in big handicaps at York. He
finished second to the smart Imperial Stride at the Royal
meeting then trotted up in one of the most competitive
handicaps of the season, the John Smith’s Cup.
After that romp - off a mark in the lOOs - handicaps were
off the agenda and Mullins Bay now steps into Pattern
company.
As stated many times before, the gap between Listed or Group
3 races and top handicaps isn’t that great and Mullins Bay
is more than capable of making the jump.
