For all money the Ladbrokes World Hurdle appeared to be another walkover for the incomparable Big Buck's, but that was until Grands Crus shot on to the scene with an emphatic victory in the Cleeve Hurdle in January and the race has now become intriguing.
Big Buck's still heads the market at 10/11 with Ladbrokes bookmakers free bets after bagging back-to-back successes of this race in 2009 and 2010 and Paul Nicholls' machine still is the one to beat. This season has seen the eight-year-old rack up his ninth and tenth consecutive wins over hurdles and they have both shown very little. We know that he will walk all over the current crop of stayers but Grands Crus introduction will give the Stewart family-owned gelding more to think about.
David Pipe's six-year-old burst on to the World Hurdle scene when winning the Paddy Power Intermediate Hurdle and that was followed up with a ten length success at Haydock. However, it was the way the grey careered away from a decent field in the Cleeve that sent a message to Big Buck's and the bookies followed suit and cut him to 5/2 second best.
