Worth $150,000 to the winner, the race for older horses aged four-years-old and up, takes placed at Woodbine and is regarded as the season opener for top-class Flat racing east of the Atlantic. The Woodbine racetrack in Toronto is seen by many purists as the home of horse racing in North America.

In comparison to British racing, Woodbine could be compared to Newmarket in terms of its place in the hierarchy of racetracks. It is certainly the HQ of Canadian racing.

The track was opened in 1956 and underwent a big redevelopment in 1993, where two additional racecourses were built to take the tally up to three. Along with the Connaught Stakes, Woodbine also is the place where five different Grade One races take place each year, which totals over 5 million in prize money.

Perhaps the most prestigious and internationally renowned race is the Canadian International Stakes, which has been won in the past by some of the world's best horses.

The Woodbine Mile, Northern Dancer Breeders Cup Turf, Necarctic Stakes and E.P Taylor Stakes are other important races scheduled on the calendar at Woodbine.

But Connaught Cup day is the raceday that really draws in the crowd to the track. Important and glamorous people from all over America head to Woodbine for this particular meeting.

It could be described as the Royal Ascot of the North American racing scene.

Obviously the Connaught Cup takes centre-stage but there are a whole host of competitive racing for punters to get their teeth stuck into.

The main race itself has a knack of producing a top class winner, some of the standouts over recent memory include multiple Group One winner Rahy's Attoeny, gallant seven-year-old Quiet Resolve and Kiridashi, who won back-to-back races in 1997 and 1998.
