Hennessy Gold Cup Betting
The Hennessy Gold Cup is arguably the most important and prestigious Jumps handicap race of the entire season.
With the race scheduled early in the season, usually around late November at Newbury, it is seen as one of the major starting points for top trainers and horses of the season.
It is run over the Cheltenham Gold Cup distance of three miles and attracts horses that have dreams of competing at Cheltenham. Newbury is renowned as one of the toughest jumps courses on the circuit, and the winner of this race has to show nimbleness in their jumping along with guts and determination to stay up Newbury's demanding finish.
Brandy maker Hennessy has been sponsoring the race since its inception in 1957 - which represents one of the longest standing sponsorship deals in racing history.
Rather fittingly the winner of the inaugural running, Mandarin, was owned by Peggy Hennessy, a member of the family which founded the Hennessy brand. Since then, some of the greatest three mile chasers in recent memory have performed admirably in the race, despite it being a handicap which penalises the top rated horses, which have to race on unfavourable terms with progressive types at the bottom of the handicap.
There have been only three multiple winners of the race. Mandarin came back and won the 1961 Hennessy but perhaps the greatest horses to have triumph in the race are Arkle and Denman, who both went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The 2012 renewal was won in fine style by Caruthers, but in truth in probably lacked the strength in depth of previous years. Next season's should be a cracker however, with a very good generation of novice chasers stepping up to the next level.
Alan King has a superb hand of horses next season and Invictus should be one to keep an eye on for this race.
